The intervention can be found in a “left-over” place, surrounded by streets, a sculpture, a small building in a Chinese style using form elements, which are known through the prevalence of Asian restaurants in Europe.

On a sign above the gate you can read in Chinese letters: „China Town Graz“. But where is this China Town? Is it on the way to downtown Graz or in a different direction? Does it exist at all? Will there be a China Town in the future or is this gate part of the remains of a lost culture? In the immediate vicinity there is no visible sign about the existence of such a district. Apartment blocks, commercial and trade centers dominate the scene.

Most metropolitan cities have a Chinese quarter, which is defined through letters and decorations and especially big gates.

Graz doesn’t have its own Chinese district. Gries, however, is a district with a high percentage of foreign inhabitants. The overall image of whole quarters changes when people with different cultural habits settle there. It is mostly organic processes depending on supply and demand, rents and available space.
